1/ Introduction.
Ever since I started drawing, motivation has always been a bit of a challenge for me.
One day, I'm super motivated to draw, learn a new art skill, or kickstart a project… And the next, I just want to throw in the towel. I think it's something we all struggle with from time to time.
One day, I decided to stop relying on motivation because it's too fleeting. Instead, I've been focusing on discipline.
It might not be as sexy, but it's far more dependable.
As a result, I’ve never drawn and improved as much as in 2023.
To be disciplined, you need to learn to be both tough and gentle with yourself simultaneously.
Not an easy task.
For me, one thing that's been incredibly helpful is artist facts and affirmations.
They're easy to implement, and they genuinely boost your creativity.
You simply have to jot them down and keep them within reach for those moments when you feel like giving up.
Welcome to edition #47 of the Art Missive, in which I'll introduce you to the 10 artist facts and affirmations that will keep you boosted for creating art.
2/ No bullshit.
You might think that affirmations are useless, but let me explain why you're mistaken.
As artists, our biggest challenge isn't necessarily our skills but our own minds. We all have limiting beliefs, negative ideas that we believe are true and hold us back.
Essentially, it's that little voice in your head telling you that you won't succeed, leading you to give up. These thoughts can make you doubt yourself and give up on your creative goals.
However, there's a way to reprogram your brain and shatter these limiting thoughts that hinder your creative process, and that's where affirmations come in.
What I like to call "artists' facts and affirmations" are essentially short, powerful phrases that inspire action and determination. They serve as reminders of your goals, aspirations, and the reasons why you embarked on your artistic journey in the first place.
Furthermore, as artists, we often work alone, and not all of us have a supportive community of fellow artists ready to provide discipline when doubt creeps in. This is where artists' facts and affirmations come in handy—they help you stay focused and driven, even when you're navigating your artistic path alone.
3/ Take action.
In my view, affirmations should serve three purposes:
Help you believe in your abilities as an artist. They counteract self-doubt and negative self-talk that often lead to art block.
Ignite determination by reminding you of your goals and your ability to achieve them. They serve as daily reminders of what you're working toward.
Keep your goals at the forefront of your mind. This constant focus can help you make decisions and take actions aligned with your objectives.
Now, as you're reading this newsletter, I want you to grab a sticky note or a piece of paper and write down the phrases that will boost you!
If you're feeling a bit lazy or don't know where to start, you can copy my affirmations and pin them to your wall 👇
4/ 10 affirmations.
Here are 10 boosting artist facts and affirmations that I like to use:
I have the ability to achieve any artistic goals I set for myself.
Skills are simply tools to a greater goal: evoking emotions.
I can show up every day.
Every bit of practice, no matter how short, counts.
My art can touch people's hearts.
I’m not scared of failure, they’re opportunities to discover innovative solutions.
Consistent intentional small practices can teach me more than big projects.
Improvement comes through practice, repetition, and the passage of time.
It's normal to feel lost at times, but I'll keep going.
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
It may sound overly simple, but if you believe in them wholeheartedly and and repeat them daily, you will notice a significant improvement in both your discipline and art practice.
5/ Conclusion.
Before we part ways, I want to emphasize the importance of your mindset as an artist. As we near the year's end, it's an excellent moment to reflect and learn how taking care of your mental state can truly boost your artistic journey. Our inner dialogue is like a secret weapon for artists, and it can either hold us back or drive us forward. That's why I encourage you to explore techniques like affirmations, which can help you gain control over your thoughts, transforming them into a steady flow of creativity.
