Introduction.
On Instagram, much like everywhere else in the digital realm, visibility is king. But with a sea of talented creators, how can you truly differentiate yourself?
Search Strategy:
Instagram's algorithm is a key gatekeeper, shaping which accounts or posts rise to the top of user searches. Tailoring your content and profile to align with this algorithm can position you more prominently in Instagram searches, fueling organic growth.
Engagement Strategy:
Boost post visibility by motivating your audience to engage—whether it's through likes, comments, shares, or saves. The deeper the engagement, the more prominent your content becomes on your followers' feeds.
Therefore every interaction or search is a potential path leading back to your profile. Once there, your task is to grab and retain their interest, guiding them from mere visitors to loyal followers or even customers for your art.
Optimizing your IG profile can be intimidating, that is why in this edition #37 of the Art Missive, I’ll break down the big 4 chunks that make it up.
1/ Profile picture: That tiny circle that says a thousand words about you.
2/ SEO name: The sneaky trick to make sure the world finds you.
3/ Bio: Your 150-character elevator pitch. Make it count!
4/ The final touch : Really important for artists!
1/ Profile picture.
That small circle atop your Instagram? It's your intro to the world. It's seen in search results, followers' feeds, and your stories. More than just a photo, it's the face of your brand and a hint of your artistry. This is why it's very important to have a unique and recognizable profile picture.
Unfortunately, I see too many artists making the same mistake: trying to pack so much into this small circle, and having a blurry or pixelated profile image. These two mistakes make your art profile unprofessionalism and not attractive at all.
💡Your takeaways:
👉 Keep your profile picture simple and easily understandable. Always aim for clarify and simplicity.
👉 Your Instagram profile picture is more than just a photo. It's your visual handshake. Make sure it resonates with who you are and what you offer. If someone gets your essence from that tiny circle, you're golden.
👉 Don't underestimate the power of external input. Sometimes, a fresh set of eyes (especially from those who know your work) can pinpoint what you might be overlooking in your self-presentation. Make it count!
2/ SEO name.
Instagram offers users two distinct naming types- your username and your SEO name. But what’s the real difference?
Your username, little demons, is that unique tag associated with your profile. It's your online handle, the "@something" that people use to tag or mention you. It's like your very own digital fingerprint.
The SEO name, unlike your username, is fluid, changeable, and most significantly, searchable. Think of this space as your own mini billboard on the digital highway. While "Emma Lee" might easily be lost in a sea of other Emma Lees, "Emma Lee | Abstract Painter" immediately tells those scrolling by what you're all about. It's the difference between being a needle in a haystack and a shining beacon for all those art aficionados searching for "Abstract Painter.
💡Your takeaways:
👉 Your SEO name isn’t just about identity; it's about accessibility. Infuse it with keywords that truly represent your art. Think of it as your digital business card.
👉 An effective SEO name is both niche-related and target audience-focused. Don't hesitate to take the time to brainstorm before changing it
3/ Bio.
Your Instagram bio is more than just a footnote. Think of it as your digital elevator pitch - a concise yet powerful introduction to who you are, what you do, and why it matters. And remember, in the world of social media, first impressions count!
Now, before you get overwhelmed, let's break it down a bit. A balanced bio should have:
Clarity: Your followers (or potential followers) should understand, at a glance, your niche or specialty. Are you a digital artist? A portrait sketcher? Or perhaps a mural maestro?
Personality: This is where you let a bit of "you" shine through. Maybe it's a quirky comment about how you only paint at midnight or a nod to your favorite art era.
Engagement Point: Why should they stay? Maybe you've got a new collection coming up, or perhaps you offer art lessons. Give them a reason to click that 'follow' button.
And here's a little pro-tip: sprinkle in some emojis or symbols (sparingly!) to break the monotony and add some zest.
💡Your takeaways:
👉 Your bio should be a harmonious blend of clarity, personality, and engagement. It’s your chance to hook, introduce, and intrigue—all in just a couple of lines.
👉 Don't be afraid to periodically refresh your bio as you evolve as an artist. Keeping it updated and relevant is key.
4/ The final touch.
Have you ever stumbled upon an Instagram profile and felt immediately drawn in, almost as if each post seamlessly flows into the next? That's the magic of feed harmony. And when paired with strategically chosen highlights, it's a recipe for success.
Your highlights are very underratted. They can be a peek into your process, a showcase of your best works, or even testimonials from satisfied clients. They add depth to your profile and encourage prolonged exploration.
Your profile feed, on the other hand, is like your ever-evolving art collection. Whether you choose a dominant color theme, maintain a particular editing style, or follow a certain posting pattern, having some consistency helps in creating an aesthetic appeal.
💡 Your takeaways:
👉 Consider choosing a dominant color or theme to create a sense of harmony in your feed. This not only looks visually appealing but also provides a cohesive brand image.
👉 Consistency is key, but don't be afraid to mix things up once in a while. After all, art is about expression, and your feed should be a reflection of your evolving journey as an artist.
Conclusion.
Perfecting your Instagram profile is an art in itself. Remember, it's not just about attracting viewers, but about turning those casual scrollers into engaged followers. So, as you craft your profile, remember to stay true to your art, to talk to your audience and most importantly, to take the time to answer this question : “What do I want people to remember about my instagram profile?”
That's all for me. See you next Monday!
Léa, Mama demon for those in the know.
