1/ Introduction.
"Good artists copy, great artists steal."— Pablo Picasso.
One question that seems to pop up in my inbox more than any other: "How did you find your style?"
Most artists harbor the notion that style is something you're born with. Yet, the path to uncovering one's style often lies in studying other artists.
In edition #41 of the Art Missive, let's dive into why having role models is a game-changer for any artist.
2/ The myth of style.
The question of "style" is at the forefront for many artists reaching out to me. Intriguingly, it's not so much the pursuit of style that's problematic, but rather the approach taken to unearth it.
Many are under the impression that they must find their style before embarking on the creative process, as if style is the end goal. Yet, style mirrors our personal evolution: it's fluid, ever-changing, and can't be pinned down to a strict definition.
Looking at the revered masters of art, it's evident their style evolved over the course of their careers. Instead of fixating on "What is my style?", a more enriching inquiry would be, "How can I delve into and nurture my unique style?"
After all, style is sculpted by the journey of learning and experimentation, not the other way around.
3/ Role Models.
Many writers, including Stephen King, assert that emulation is a foundational step towards sculpting one's style. By copying an artist's work, you assimilate specific elements that resonate with you.
Yet, caution is imperative. Emulating just one person transforms you into their mere reflection. The real essence lies in drawing inspiration from a myriad of individuals, encapsulating the core of Role Models.
Consider them akin to mentors who don't necessarily need to induct you as their protégé.
Hence, a potent avenue to navigate your creative sphere is by delving deep into the works of 2-3 individuals who invigorate your artistic senses, striving to decode the allure they hold for you.
With the sands of time, your Role Models might undergo a metamorphosis. Currently, I find myself engrossed in the artworks of @elizmil.art, @Polina Bright, and @Jennifer Healy. Each one offers distinct elements, collectively shaping the style I embrace today.
4/ Steal like an artist.
Understanding the significance of drawing inspiration from others transformed my artistry. But, it's not about mere imitation.
One must delve into other artists' works. Observe what makes their pieces stand out, and integrate those insights into your unique style without directly copying.
Here are a step-by-step list to help you steal like an artist :
1️⃣ Select an artist whose work you deeply connect with and respect.
2️⃣ Pinpoint a particular element or facet in their art that truly enthralls you.
3️⃣ Delve into their artistic pieces, zeroing in on that chosen element and scrutinizing its intricacies. Dedicate ample time for this exploration!
4️⃣ Infuse the insights gained from this artist into your creative endeavors, crafting a piece that mirrors your distinct interpretation and flair.
5️⃣ Showcase this masterpiece for all to see!
5/ Conclusion.
For every artist, surrounding oneself with inspirations and guides is pivotal in charting a creative journey. To grasp this process more intuitively, let's classify these inspirations into two distinct categories:
Artistic Mentors: These are the artists who seem to be a few steps ahead of you on the creative ladder. Seek out those who, in your perspective, epitomize where you'd envision yourself in 1 to 3 years.
They can assist in mastering technical subtleties and address specific inquiries such as, "What technique does she employ to achieve that effect?" or "How does she approach this particular subject?"
Role Models: Picture them as the distant stars towards which you aim to navigate in the long run. They stand as beacons for your overarching art vision, guiding you on broader queries like, "What prominent themes does she incorporate into her artwork?"
By assimilating insights from both these categories, you'll enrich your artistic path while preserving your uniqueness.
That's all for me. See you next Monday!
Léa, Mama demon for those in the know.
